When I heard there was a Netflix original Bella Thorne horror movie, it got a hard pass in my book. Then I heard the trailer was worth watching … so I saw it, and just like that I was sold. It looked like a bad 80’s horror movie in the best ways. So we decided to give it a go since it is was too rainy to carve pumpkins outside. How was it?
I would give it 9 “knives to the head after kissing” out of 10.
FOR THE UNINITIATED
The Babysitter centers around Cole, a worrysome young teenager. He finds out his hot babysitter leads satanic rituals using the kids for the blood of innocents one night while staying up to see if she sleeps with someone at night. Naturally, Cole must survive the night and kill anyone in his way.
Director: McG
Writer: Brian Duffield
Starring: Samara Weaving, Bella Thorne, Robbie Amell, Hana Mae Lee, Leslie Bibb, and Ken Marino
THE BEST
The amount of fun throughout this movie is ridiculous. It doesn’t try to be a horror movie in the slightest, but steers into a cheesy or campy parody. The soundtrack and titlecards are on point, which only add fuel to the fire. Not only that, but the dialogue was very snappy and witty. Additionally there were so many Checkov’s gun scenarios that played out perfectly.
Maybe it was all of my cold / flu medicine from throughout the weekend or the lack of clever movies I have seen lately, but this movie was phenomenal!
THE WORST
The only negative I can think of at this time is that the movie could have stretched out a little longer. Then again, part of the charm is how quick everything moved along. It is a near perfect movie for what it aims to be.
OVERALL
The Babysitter is a Netflix original movie that is worth watching. It is fairly original, moves along quickly, and is surprisingly smart. If you want to see a hilarious horror movie that is perfect for Halloween.
RECOMMENDATION
After the first titlecard flashed on the screen, I knew exactly what movie I was going to recommend: Inglorious Basterds. It kept the camp that you would expect from a Quentin Tarantino movie. If you like Tarantino movies and somehow missed this one, then you should be ashamed of yourself. Overall, if you like movies then you should check this out since there is something for everyone.
