It Follows

#16 – Netflix

Our friends have a monthly themed movie night and this month’s theme was Valentine’s Day obviously. I suggested a non-traditional option such as It Follows since they are horror fiends. I had heard nothing but positive things and all we knew is the spirit was literally a killer STD. Positive reviews, interesting plot, horror movie, and good friends … what could go wrong?

This is where I would describe the movie without spoiling it … but I feel like I need to pad this paragraph since it is fairly straightforward. Jay develops a quick relationship with Hugh that ends with them sleeping together. He then drugs her in order to show the curse that has been passed along. Jay will now be followed by a spirit that always walks, never stopping until it catches, and kills her. The only way to get rid of it is to sleep with someone else. If they die, it goes to the person before them.

I would give this movie 3 “back seat romps” out of 10.

The idea of this movie is the best part, especially since it was treated as an independent horror movie. Having something pursue you non-stop is a terrifying idea, it was even the driving force behind James Cameron creating The Terminator. Throw in that this thing can change what it looks like and the characters are never able to relax.

The acting and the execution ruined it! The characters never seemed like they were in constant danger, never spent their waking moments looking over their shoulders, never had trouble sleeping, etc. There was only a few brushes with death, which didn’t even seem overly traumatizing. The spirit should have been shown pursuing the target more frequently and creatively. Suspense could have been built up on the fact this thing had to go through an open window or door … but not much was built up on that.

This might be the reason I don’t watch or enjoy too many horror movies: they cannot seem to execute their ideas. There were several scenes where my friends and I expected a jump scare or something along those lines and nothing happened. The ending was an especially poor in terms of execution, it was secretive for no reason and very disappointing.  I would only watch this if you can see it for free and enjoy low budget horror movies.

If you want a movie with a persistent force that is constantly pursuing you, I will go with the movie mentioned earlier … The Terminator. I won’t insult you by describing the plot, I will just leave two excellent quotes that are better than It Follows as a whole.

Listen, and understand! That Terminator is out there! It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop… ever, until you are dead

You still don’t get it, do you? He’ll find her! That’s what he does! That’s ALL he does! You can’t stop him! He’ll wade through you, reach down her throat and pull her fuckin’ heart out!
