Allow me to cut straight to the chase and be blunt: This year (like the year before it) was not a good year for movies. There were a few bright spots spread across the year, but for the most part there was a lot of filler and desperate attempts to cash in on franchises. Sure it was another record breaking year financially; but that falls squarely on the shoulders of the movie going public who wanted to believe in the product available. Then again, Avatar and Titanic are the highest grossing movies of all time and I wouldn’t count those among the all time great movies.
I went through the list of movies I have seen and compiled a list of my favorites (in order). I thought about doing short reviews but decided against it since significant time has passed since I saw most and wouldn’t be able to do them justice.
- Nice Guys
- Captain America: Civil War
- Hell or Highwater
- Deadpool
- Star Trek Beyond
- Zootopia
- Rogue One
- The Accountant
- Bad Moms
- The Magnificent 7
This year wasn’t the best for movies, but there were several that just missed the mark completely or flopped under the expectations set by the predecessors (Disney movies for the case of Moana). With that said, here are the movies I liked the least in no particular order. One side note is I will probably re-watch BvS and see if the Ultimate Cut is worthwhile since I heard it fixed a lot of the pacing and storyline issues.
- Triple 9
- The Shallows
- Now You See Me 2
- Barbershop: The Next Cut
- Moana
- Blair Witch
- Alice Through the Looking Glass
- Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
- Nerve
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
With the top and bottom 10 listed, here is my movie math for the year that is quickly coming to a close:
- 146 wide releases in theatres
- 51 of those were watched in theatres (not counting re-watches)
- 2 were seen at home (not counting re-watches)
- ~50 movies from prior years or other sources (estimated minimum)
My goal of reviewing 100 movies next year seems very feasible. So I hope to get my stride soon and find my unique voice in a world where everyone is a critic.
